Globeflower
Trollius europaeus
Globeflower is a perennial herb belonging to the buttercup family. It flowers from May to August, with each individual having a large yellow, almost spherical, flower. It is found in wet habitats such as damp meadows, wet pastures and stream banks. It prefers base rich soil and is intolerant of heavy grazing.

Globeflower is locally distributed in Britain northwards from South Wales and Derbyshire and in Northern Ireland. It has declined in Britain; the main reason is the drainage of damp meadows and the application of fertiliser to grasslands.
The Globeflower was believed to be locally extinct in the Tees Valley. It was rediscovered at two localities in Stockton district. These local populations have been complimented by a comprehensive reintroduction programme, using ex-situ propagation from seeds of the local populations. The species was a Tees Valley priority species until 2007 and has now been removed from the list due to the apparent success of the reintroduction programme.
