Pondscape database and surveys
The Tees Valley Pondscape Project mapped 1000 ponds across the Tees Valley, with basic survey information on 450 ponds. These have been mapped on GIS using ArcView and linked to any additional data such as amphibians, plans, management advice, habitat types and invertebrates.
Availability of data
The Tees Valley Pondscape Project data is a resource that is freely available and is anticipated to be a valuable source of information for land managers, local and public bodies, planners, researchers and ecological consultants. The datasets have already been shared with regional and national organisations including the Environmental Records and Information Centre North East (ERIC), the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) and the National Pond Monitoring Network (NPN) via Pond Conservation.
There are three ways of accessing data from the project. The method selected will depend upon the level of information required and the computer software available to the user.
1. Some data has been made publically available and can be viewed interactively using GoogleTM maps through the Tees Valley Pondscape Project website Data on protected species and landowner details has been removed from this data set. Sources of additional data collated by the project are signposted. This is provided as a means of spatial data for those users who have neither access nor experience of GIS.
The data available on GoogleTM maps.

2. GIS layers plus data in Microsoft Excel files are available on a CD from the Tees Valley Wildlife Trust. (Land owner details have been removed because of data protection law.) Sources of additional data collated by the project are signposted. The metadata table of the Tees Valley Pondscape data is in Microsoft Excel and can be viewed on the CD or through the web based GoogleTM maps. This gives the pond unique reference number plus grid reference and lists the type of data that has been collected for each pond.
3. Protected species data is held by ERIC. Data requests can be made by visiting their website at www.ericnortheast.org.uk/home
Please note that some data collated by the project, if collected by other surveyors /organisations, may not be held by ERIC and does not form part of the dataset available from the TVBP website (one example is the Teesmouth Bird Club, Martin Hammond). These sources are signposted in the comments section of the species database. Please click here to view the document explaining how our data has been compiled and a guide to using it (still under construction)
Requesting full datasets
Full datasets can be obtained via the North East Environmental Records Centre (ERIC) or by contacting individual recorders.
