Ponds – a national priority habitat
In 2006 ponds became a national priority habitat in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. The lead partners are Pond Conservation and the Environment Agency.
Not all ponds will be protected under the Habitat Action Plan. Priority ponds will need to meet certain criteria and it is estimated that around 20% of the 400,000 or so ponds in the UK (excluding garden ponds) will meet one or more of the criteria.
